What is fully drawn yarn (FDY)?
FDY stands for Fully Drawn Yarns. Fully drawn yarns are also called Polyester Filament Yarn (PFY) or Spin Draw Yarn (SDY). These yarns are fully drawn yarns which are fixed through various processes such as stretching, orientation and crystallization. Fully Drawn yarns are mainly available for Polyester fiber. These highly drawn polyester filament yarns are mainly used in producing fabrics and textiles of high strength. During the weaving process of textiles, fully drawn yarns are mainly used as weft or weaves.
Fully Drawn yarns can be used as the first material of twisted threads and can be directly used in knitting. To produce varieties in fabrics, these FDY can combine with other filament yarns during knitting and weaving. By twisting these polyester yarns, polyester embroidery threads and polyester sewing threads are also manufactured. These kinds of yarns have a wide range of applications mainly used in Home Furnishing Fabrics, Fashion Fabrics, Denim, Terry Towel and others. The other applications of FDY are for producing high-end undergarments, high-end sportswear, home furnishings and non-textured fabrics.
Fully Drawn Yarns are mainly categorized into 3 types as per the luster which are – Semi-dull (SD), Bright (BR) and Triloble Bright (TBR). Among this, Bright FDY has a circular cross section while Trilobal Bright FDY has triangular cross-section. Curtains, bed-sheets and carpets are mainly manufactured using filament yarn having trilobal bright lustre.
As per shrinkage , FDY threads have different applications.
• High Shrinkage yarns: FDY yarns which have a high shrinkage are used in the fabrication of cloth and curtain fabrics and create a blooming structure on the fabric surface.
• Low shrinkage yarns: FDY yarns which have low shrinkage are widely used in the rachel blanket industry.
