What is the chemical composition of banana fiber?

< All Topics

Banana fiber is a leaf fiber or bast fiber which is also called musa fiber. It is extracted from the pseudostem of banana plants. It is also a lingo-cellulosic fiber which has relatively good mechanical properties when compared to other bast fibers. The stem of the banana is cylindrical in shape and is an aggregated cluster of leaf stalk bases. As banana is a natural plant-based fiber hence, the main constituent of banana fiber is cellulose which comprises 60-65 percent. Other than cellulose, banana fiber also contains 6-19 percent of hemicellulose, 5-10 percent of lignin and 3-5 percent of pectin.
