What is the chemical composition of ramie fiber?

Ramie belongs to the class of bast fibers and is a unicellular cellulosic fiber. It is one of the strongest natural fibers. Compared to all other bast fibers, ramie contains a high amount of cellulose content. Ramie is composed of 68.6 – 76.2% of Cellulose, 0.6 -0.7% of Lignin, 13.1 – 16.7% of Hemi-cellulose, 1.9% of Pectin, and 0.3% of wax. The decorticated ramie fiber contains around 19–30% of non-cellulosic gummy matter. It is a highly crystalline fiber.
