Nigerian textile industry likely to play major role to diversify economy

The Nigerian new administration favours the revival of the country's textile and footwear industry as it would play a significantly major role to diversify the economy. Not only could it result in revenue diversification and reduce pressure on the import bill, it could also help boost employment, said FBN Capital, the local financial institution.

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) recently announced it would work closely with National Cotton, Textile and Garment (CTG) policy committee to resuscitate the country's textiles industry.

ASF price rolls over in Asian markets

In the third week of November, offers for cotton-type staple fiber were steady at US$1.94-2.06 a kg in China while medium-length staple were at US$1.95-2.06 a kg.

Jilin Chemical Fiber’s list prices for November rolled over with 1.5D at US$2.06 a kg, 3D medium-length at US$2.05 a kg, tow at US$2.13 a kg and top at US$2.27 a kg.

Taiwan origin 3D bright ASF tow prices were pegged stable at US$1.65-1.80 a kg.

Acrylic staple fibre prices moved flat on the week as upstream, acrylonitrile prices continued to firm a bit, further eroding ASF producers’ margins.

Acrylonitrile price gains in Asia and US

Asian acrylonitrile markers climbed further US$10-30 a ton CFR Far East Asia in the third week of November while India FOB was at US$950-1,050 a ton.

The Southeast Asia was up at US$954-956 a ton. In China, offers for offshore cargoes rose to US$1,100 a ton.

Acrylonitrile was dearer across the Asian markets that week amid a dearth of supply and tight China supply triggered surge.

Deepsea cargoes availability however, curbed hike in prices in SE Asia and India.

Korean delegation to visit Ethiopia to help lay basis for more trade

An economic delegation of South Korea that includes 37-person, made up of government officials and businessmen, would be visiting Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast to help lay the basis for more trade and industrial cooperation, said the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Lee Sang-Jin, Director General at the Ministry of Trade's Cooperation Office, said that during the visit, leaders from the Korea Federation of Textile Industries would meet Ethiopia's President to discuss future investment plans.

The State government Excise and B.C. Welfare Minister K. Ravindra on Tuesday announced that more than Rs. 96 lakh would be spent on setting up the three common facility centres for weavers in Krishna district.

Foundation stones for the centre have already been laid at Kappaladoddi and Pedana, and officials will soon identify the location for the other centre in the district.

Andhra Pradesh government has announced debt waiver scheme to handloom and powerloom sector. Under this scheme loans worth Rs.110.96 crore will be waived. It was one of the election promises made by the Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu along with the debt redemption scheme for farmers.

The loan waiver would be implemented during Janmabhoomi programme commencing from January 1 and the Finance Department also gave its approval.

Trading activity at Pakistan cotton market showed improvement on Tuesday fearing rise of short supply, according to dealers. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2200 and Rs 2800 and in the Punjab, rates were at Rs 2300 and Rs 3000. The official spot rate was down by Rs 50 to Rs 5,300.

In the ready business, deals of over 14,000 bales of cotton finalised between Rs 5125 and Rs 5600. Dealers said.

According to cotton analyst, Naseem Usman, there is no fundamental change to observe just mills and spinners were making deals to keep themselves away from future losses.
