As the export of raw jute of Bangladesh remains suspended until further notice puts Pakistani jute industry on verge of collapse. Under section 4 and 13 of the Bangladesh Jute Ordinance 1962, the export of raw jute will remain suspended until further notice for proper implementation of the Bangladesh Mandatory Jute Packaging Act-2009.

The Pakistan Jute Mills Association (PJMA) terms the matter as quite serious as Pakistan, being one of the biggest importers of Bangladesh jute, fulfils all the basic raw material requirements of its jute industry from single country imports.

Handicraft sector hit hard over shortage of raw material

The country’s largest annual handicraft trade fair, Handicrafts Trade Fair 2015, that was schedule to open at Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall on November 26, had been postponed as the handicraft sector is facing difficulties over shortage of raw materials resulting from the agitation in the Tarai and trade embargo by India.

Exports have come to a complete halt, and handicraft makers have not been able to fulfil even domestic demand as they lack the necessary materials. The fuel crisis has also affected the production of handicrafts.

Nylon yarn price edges down in China

In the last week of November, prices of semi-dull FDY70D/24F in China were down US cents 7 a kg while FDY40D fell US cents 4-8 a kg.

Nylon DTY 70D/24F prices also fell US cents 4 a kg on the week while DTY 30D/10F were down US cents 8 a kg.

Monofilament 30D was down US cents 6 a kg and 1.5D staple fiber were up US cents 2 a kg.

Nylon filament yarn prices edged down citing decreased operating pressure on range-bound caprolactum and softening nylon chip prices.

Nylon yarn makers’ confidence improved with demand and to top it, raw materials receded relieving cost pressure.

Caprolactam prices rise in China

In China, liquid good offers were up US$40 a ton in the last week of November while solid goods were at US$1,640-1,660 a ton.

Sinopec’s November contract settlement was at US$1,650 a ton for liquid goods.

DSM Nanjing’s settlement for November was at US$1,690 a ton for solid goods.

Asian markers, the SE and FE fell US$50-70 a ton with buying indications at US$1,250 a ton and sporadic offers at US$1,300 a ton.

Trading values for East European goods were down US$50 a ton.

Pakistan likely to import more cotton bales from India

Demand from China may not see a rebound as normally it buys more than 50 per cent of India’s shipments. But Pakistan has, so far, contracted to import one million bales (170 kg each) of cotton from India after the crops there were affected by floods, according to Dhiren N Sheth, president of the cotton association of India (CAI).

Pakistan is buying more cotton from India as both the quality and quantity of the crop has come down. Pakistan’s cotton production is expected to drop 25 per cent to 11.4 million bales this year, the lowest since 2003.
