Pakistan textile exports likely to touch $13 bn this year

Pakistan textile exports have been going up steadily, in the first five month (July to November) of the current fiscal year textile shipment jumped 7.66 percent year-on-year to $5.51 billion driven primarily by a surge in value added textile exports. This positive sign raises expectations that full-year proceeds likely to touch $13 billion after a hiatus of two years.

At the cotton market in the backdrop of fast dwindling stocks of quality lint amid rising demand, cotton prices scales to season’s new peak of Rs7,800 per maund on Friday. On the other end, ginners were holding back their stocks anticipating further rise in prices due to which trading activity remained moderate.

However, a big deal of 10,300 bales from Khanpur was finalised between a ginner and spinner at season’s high Rs7,800 per maund late in the evening. Another deal of 400 bales from Dherki was done at Rs7,700 per maund.

Malawi’s cotton production has gone down from 100,000 metric tons in 2012 to around 15,000 in 2017, to revive the industry which it says is at the verge of collapsing, the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) in Malawi has urged the government to make investment of US$4.8 million (about K3.5 billion) into cotton farming, said AICC Chief Executive Officer Felix Lombe on Wednesday in Mzuzu.

Bihar agriculture ministry has sanctioned Rs 60 crore for the proposed advanced centre on sericulture (silk farming) at Abdul Kalam Agriculture College in Kishanganj this fiscal to promote silk industry in the state, said agriculture minister Prem Kumar.

The advanced centre will have separate departments for detailed study on mulberry plants, mulberry production, silkworm, silk textile technology and the one dealing with the pest problem that afflict silkworms.

Cotton price continued to remain unchanged

At the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Thursday, slow trading activity was witnessed also the spot rates remained unchanged at Rs7,000/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,502/40kg.

Ex-Karachi rates also stood firm at Rs7,145/maund and Rs7,657/40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

The cotton market recorded only 10 transactions of around 1,500 bales at a price of Rs6,300 to Rs7,500/maund. Notable transactions were recorded from Daharki, Ghotki, DG Khan, Jahanian, Faqirwali, Haroonabad and Bahawalnagar.

India’s cotton export assessed to rise to 67 lakh bales in current year

The current 2017-18 marketing year which started in October, due to the rise in the output of the commodity, Parliament was informed that the cotton export is estimated to increase by 15 percent to 67 lakh bales (of 170 kg each). This assessment was made by the Cotton Advisory Board.

The crop production is estimated to increase to 377 lakh bales during the 2017-18 period, from 345 lakh bales.

Minister of State for Textiles Ajay Tamta said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that the shipments were aggregated at 58.21 lakh bales during 2016-17 marketing year,
