P. Alli Rani, Chairman and Managing Director of CCI, told that the Cotton Corporation would need space in 500 to 600 warehouses. The Cotton Corporation purchased 3.6 lakh bales of cotton at MSP (minimum support price) during the current cotton season (October 2017 to September 2018). However, with the steep hike in MSP for cotton, the CCI might have to purchase huge quantities next season (October 2018 to November 2019).

The country’s cotton consumption for the 7 months from October 2017 to April 2018 stood at 189 lakh bales with an average of 27 lakh bales per month. Exports are estimated at 61 lakh bales as on April-end.The Statistics Committee of CAI has projected total cotton supply up to April 30, 2018 at 347 lakh bales. This includes market arrivals of 311 lakh bales and imports estimated at 6 lakh bales, the CAI statement said.

The current 2017-18 marketing year which started in October, due to the rise in the output of the commodity, Parliament was informed that the cotton export is estimated to increase by 15 percent to 67 lakh bales (of 170 kg each). This assessment was made by the Cotton Advisory Board.

The crop production is estimated to increase to 377 lakh bales during the 2017-18 period, from 345 lakh bales.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) is prepared to procure some 100 lakh bales of cotton either at Minimum Support Price (MSP) or market prices this season with the cotton arrivals beginning in full swing, according to CCI chief MM Chokalingam. The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will be setting up three new cotton procurement centres at Mulugu, Kataram and Chityal in the Bhupalpally district for the convenience of the farmers. The farmers need not go distant places to sell their produce, said District Collector A Murali.

The collector also conducted a review meeting over the cotton procurement for the season 2017-18 with the officials of the marketing department, ginning mills owners and cotton traders at his office in Bhupalpally on Wednesday.
