Zim govt to impose 30pc duty on imported cotton fabrics starting Jan 1

Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa in his 2018 National Budget statement announced that the government to begin effect tax measures starting from January1 aimed at protecting local textile industries.

He said that it is proposed to increase customs duty on imported cotton fabric from 10% to 30% plus $2,50 per kilogramme, with effect from January 1, 2018.

Notwithstanding support measures availed by government to the textile manufacturing industry, the sector continues to face competition due to the influx of dumped cheap imported fabrics.

Chairman of HTEC said that Egypt will also participate in the Carpet Domotex International exhibition, which is scheduled to be held in Hanover from January 13 to 17, 2018.

ASF price edges down in China

In China, ASF prices fell with medium-length fibre and cotton-type down US cents 14 a kg in the second week of December. Taiwan origin 3D bright ASF tow offers were down US cents 13 a kg on the week.

ASF offers in China declined that week after six weeks of stability as there was limited support from the upstream ACN market during the week.

Downstream yarn mills held bearish expectation toward ASF market, and made more measured procurement on the limited terminal demand recently. Producers operated at reduced run rate in order to maintain normal inventory.

Acrylonitrile price declines in Asia, US

Asian acrylonitrile markers, CFR Far East and South East Asia were both down US$10 a ton in the second week of December. In China, offers for offshore cargoes were flat on the week while prices in India were stable.

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets fell that week despite strong propylene market. Prices were pressured by increasing availability in the region. PetroChina Jilin is planning to shut its 452,000 tons per year ACN plant for maintenance by April-May 2018.

Slow down in trading activity at cotton market

Cotton market witnessed slowed down in trading activity due to December closing. At the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Tuesday, trading remained slow, while spot rates remained unchanged.

The spot rates stood firm at Rs7,000/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,502/ 40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also remained unchanged at Rs7,145/ maund and Rs7,657/ 40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

Textile ministry seeks additional funds of Rs33.27 cr for powerlooms

The textiles ministry, which had allocated a sum of Rs 126.76 crore for 2017-18, Rs.83.08 crore has already been spent till now and is planning to seek an additional Rs 33.27 crore for the Power Tex India scheme in the form of supplementary demand for grants, said textile minister Smriti Irani earlier this week in the Rajya Sabha.
