In the wake of less-than-expected domestic production of cotton, the federal government allowed import of cotton from India in the last week of November but the official permit in this regard is only effective for the first three months of 2018 due to which cotton imports from India have been delayed, it was learnt on Wednesday.

No volume of cotton could be imported from India by land or sea routes as permits issued by the Department of Plant Protection, Ministry of Food Security were valid only for the period of January 1, 2018 to March 31, 2018.

The 21st Vietnam International Fashion Fair (VIFF) 2017 officially kicked off on December 21 with the participation of nearly 150 enterprises. Trading activities at cotton market remained stable with demand for good quality local lint. According to analyst, trading activity would be low next week due to holidays and bank closing.

At the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Thursday, normal trading continue while spot rates remained unchanged.

The spot rates stood firm at Rs7,000/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,502/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also remained unchanged at Rs7,145/maund and Rs7,657/40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

The Turkish Suteks Group established in 1986 in Istanbul, produces and exports high-end fashion and it also produced stock for the Dutch retailer for 15 years before the acquisition of Dutch Braez brand two years ago, is now preparing to bring the clothing retailer to Turkey, according to Nur Ger, the founder of the textile company.

Ger, who belongs to a family well-rooted in the business, is the owner of Braez, which has 250 stores abroad, together with other Turkish brands.

Benzene markets in Asia hit an eight-month high in November 2017 on strong buying interest and high upstream prices. In US, spot benzene prices jumped on tight prompt supply during the month. Supply in the US has been tight since late October due to regional plant outages. In Europe, benzene spot market rose as significant volumes were still being shipped to the US where supply continued to be tight. Asian marker, FOB Korea surged 7.8% in November while US spot prices were up 15.8%. European spot rose 15.9% on the month.

In China, ASF prices rolled over in the first week of December with medium-length fibre and cotton-type flat on the week. Taiwan origin 3D bright ASF tow offers were up US cents 4 a kg during the week.

Acrylic staple fibre prices were stable in the Asian markets of China while they fell in India and stable in Pakistan. In China, ASF offers were steady as there was limited support from the upstream ACN market during the week.

Asian acrylonitrile prices fell US$11 a ton CFR Far East Asia in the first week of December while CFR South East was also down US$10 a ton on the week. Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets fell that week despite high upstream cost as supply in the region was increasing week on week.

In China, offers for offshore cargoes were flat on the week while prices in India were largely stable. Indian imports of acrylonitrile in September 2017 rose 35% to 10,239 tons as compared to same month last year.
