A government-based firm, Japan External Trade Organization, will be hosting its first Japan Textile Salon in New York city. Around 22 textile exhibitors are chosen to showcase design techniques and the use of various fabrications and materials.

Asuka Yatabe, a project coordinator for the Japan External Trade Organization, said that the exhibitors selected are “among the top weavers, design studios and manufacturers. This show is extremely focused.”

The Central Silk Board (CSB) has earmarked a budget of Rs6.3 crore for the development of silk industry in Odisha State in the current fiscal. They have already sanctioned Rs94 lakh and asked the State to send them more proposals under the Central Sponsored Schemes (CSS), said chairman of CSB KM Hanumantharayappa.

As promised by Union Minister for Textile and Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani during International Women’s Day last year to replace thigh reeling, Hanumantharayappa said that Odisha has so far been provided 106 Buniyad machines.

Cotton market on Saturday witnessed slow down in trading activity following the government’s decision to withdraw duty and taxes on lint imports. This is a timely decision because much of the local cotton had already been lifted by spinners and very little quantity is left with growers and ginners.

Though world cotton prices are currently on the higher side, it seems that many buyers would like to exercise the option of imports after the government removed 4 percent customs duty and 5pc sales tax on lint imports.

One of the oldest textile companies in Bulawayo city, Merlin Limited, which was under judicial management, has secured a partnership and resumed its operation following the implementation of a business rescue strategy involving immediate injection of $2.1 million minimum working capital by one of the firm’s creditors.

In an interview on Friday, Merlin judicial manager Mr Cecil Madondo said that Merlin is now up and operational with feed material such as yarn having been procured.

During the trading session at the cotton market due to shrinking of better grades of lint, leading buyer made deals for better grades at a slightly higher price to maintain their inventories. Buyers also made forward deals for a month in anticipation of a further increase in better stuff prices.

The physical prices remained steady and influx of phutti (cottonseed) in ginneries remained normal.
