Thailand buys cotton from India

After the declined cotton imports from China this June, India is all set to scale up its cotton exports to Thailand. One of the biggest mills in Thailand has shown interest in purchasing cotton from India after having samples approved.

China, the world’s biggest buyer, has imported less fibre this year which has affected Indian exports. China has been the largest importer of Indian cotton over the last three years.

Manmade fibre export marginally down

In June, cotton fibre export was at 36 million kg or 210,000 bales (of 170 kg each) valued at US$56 million down 3 per cent as compared to the previous month. Bangladesh, China and Pakistan were the largest importers of cotton in June with combined volumes at 190,000 bales amongst the 12 countries that imported cotton from India.

Union government has given its nod to set up a common facility centre in Panipat known for manufacturing textile products and textile machinery for industrialists associated with this sector to give boost.

It would be a common place for industrialists to get training, knowledge and technology about the manufacturing of textile machinery. It would help them upgrade their skills with advanced technologies, said Vijay Kumar, director, MSME Development Institute (Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), Karnal.

CCI offloads half of its cotton stock under MSP

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) which procured 8.6 million bales (1 bale = 170 kgs) of cotton since October 2014, has started offloading the stock in both domestic and international markets through daily and weekly tenders. CCI has sold nearly half of the cotton stock it procured in the crop year 2014-15 under the minimum support price (MSP) operation.

Filament yarns export sees a decline again

Export of filament yarns (all types) aggregated 52 million kg in June worth US$84 million. Compared with the previous month, both were down 3.1 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively. In June, filament yarns were exported to 82 countries. Filament yarns include polyester, nylon, polypropylene and viscose filament yarns. More than 90 per cent of all filament yarns were made of polyester, of which, DTYs were the largest at 70 per cent.

Government last week announced several austerity measures meant to resuscitate the economy which include new levies and taxes on imported groceries, fertilizer and a ban on the importation of second-hand clothes. Following Government's directive to ban all second-hand clothes on the local market, Zimbabwe Clothing and textile manufacturers are eying 100 percent capacity utilization by 2020.
