Cotton prices tumbled across markets in the last week of July with numbers plunging midweek on fears that China, the world’s largest purchaser of cotton, may continue having problems with its economy. The US weather forecast for the southern US are dry, which emerged as good news for the growing cotton crop.

Benchmark December Futures lost further US cent 0.43 per pound for the week and the near month October contract fell US cents 1.83. The Cotlook A index also lost US cents 0.80 per pound while the China Cotton Index inched down 20 Yuan a ton.

Indian textiles exports and clothing due to recessionary conditions in global markets is already facing slow move, to further have an adverse impact with the sudden move on the part of China to devalue its currency yuan, an industry body has said.

China's central bank on Tuesday devalued its tightly controlled currency by close to 2% to boost exports amid a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy and the recent stock market crash.

Even as global exports are on a sliding path, this decline in global demand is putting pressure on the export-driven Chinese economy.

The Silk Mark Expo organized by the Silk Mark Organisation of India, under the Central Silk Board and the Union Ministry of Textiles has begun at Sree Mulam Club with the promise of authentic silk.

The expo was inaugurated by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday. K.S. Menon, Silk Mark CEO; T.D. Koshi, consultant; and Babu Giridharan, senior executive; were present.

The expo has 50 stalls representing all silk producing States and centres in the country. Almost one crore Silk Mark products are available here. A major highlight is the designer sari collection.

For yarn spinners, power cost are a nightmare as nearly 40% of the cost of conversion from cotton to yarn is taken up by power expenses.

However, the origin of problem lies in the malfunction of machinery. A dislodged belt, a wobbling pulley, or a worn out motor could result in more power being drawn without the problem being detected.

Indonesian textile industry would still be pressured in the second half of the year and predicted that sales and exports of textile products would remain sluggish, according to Ade Sudrajat, head of Indonesian Textile Association (API).

The domestic textile and related products market has been projected to generate Rp 60 trillion ($4.3 billion) in the second half of the year as local products hold only 20 percent of market share and the industry feels the effects of a dragging economy, an association chief said.

Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) has signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with INSA (Indian National Ship Owners' Association) for transporting cotton through ships. Textile spinning mills in Tamil Nadu to start transport cotton from Gujarat to their units here by ship as the shipping companies have agreed to reduce cost, said T Rajkumar, chairman, SIMA.

Viscose filament yarn prices rolled over during the last week of July, with modest demand-supply scenario at the producers’ level. Market offers for the first-class, second-class, and third-class rolled over in China. Export to Europe withered slightly, thus sales pressure shifted to domestic market.

On the other hand, trading sentiment moderated as distributors and downstream converters maintained small-volume procurement, pushing inventory at some producers up. Prices in India also rolled over previous week’s numbers.
