Despite a fast growing fashion and design industry, centuries-old traditional weaving is noticeably dying out in Ethiopia. A three day fiesta, "Shaan-e-Pakistan" all set to begin from September 10 will have fashion designers from India and Pakistan showcasing a range of textiles and lifestyle accessories here, which aims to enhance co-operation between the two countries. It has roped in over 150 exhibitors from both the countries.

Muhammad Irfan Tarar, Minister (Trade) High Commission for Pakistan yesterday said that this is a common platform for artisans and designers from both the countries to come together and showcase their talent.

The yuan weakening likely to have negative impacts on Vietnam’s economy in the long term, according to Dang Phuong Dung, deputy chair of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vinatas), as Chinese imports to Vietnam will increase in the time to come as a result of the weaker yuan. This will discourage enterprises to spend money to increase their localization ratios. With low locally made content, Vietnamese products will not be able to satisfy the requirements on product origin to enjoy preferential tariffs within the framework of FTAs and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Paraxylene price falls in the initial period of August

Paraxylene markets in Asia tracked declining upstream as mixed xylene prices fell in the first week of August while Hengli has decided to shut its Dalian PTA plants. In US, spot paraxylene assessments dropped week over week amid quiet demand and arrival of shipment arrivals from Asia adding to supply. The MX-PX spread was better, but still unattractive.

In Europe, paraxylene prices were down on week while MX premium over Aug gasoline fell amid steady downstream PTA market. No August contract prices were settled yet.

Spanish company out with mosquito-repellent shirt

Spanish textile company STINGBye based in Catalonia has come up with a shirt that repels mosquitos and other insects such as mites, ticks, lice and bedbugs, after devoting four years to research and development.

STINGBye company introduced the product to the Spain market in June, and it is available across 80 pharmacies in Spain. The company will apparently begin exporting its product in the near future.

Acrylic staple fibre market remains steady

Acrylic staple fibre markets were calm in the first week of August and prices generally rolled over. In China, mainstream producers rolled over their offers despite upstream acrylonitrile prices were southbound. Downstream yarn sector saw mills running at low run rates and buying hand-to-mouth volume amid the seasonal lull. However, ASF producers still saw normal liquidity, while inventory was tolerable despite a mild increase.

Cotton crop expected to give a record yield in Vidarbha region

Vidarbha which is always linked with agricultural crisis due to rains during the last fortnight have changed the situation. The cotton crop is now expected to give a record yield. Last year was marred by a drought and excessive rains had hit the farmers the year before.

However, experts feel that good harvest may not be met with good prices. Cotton rates are expected to reign below the minimum support price (MSP) of 4,050 a quintal. At present, lint is being quoted at 33,000 a bale, which translates into 3,700 a quintal for raw cotton.

Anakaputhur Jute Weavers' Association which has been known for using innovative methods has launched handwoven 'herbal' sari on Friday. The unique sari is spun with cotton yarn, which is dyed with natural colours and is immersed into a liquid paste made of tulsi, neem and turmeric. The medicinal properties of these plants act as remedy for all kinds of skin diseases, said the president of the association, C Sekar.

Representatives of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, South India Millers' Association, North Indian Millers Association, and Texprocil met in New Delhi on Monday to take stock of the situation faced by cotton spinning mills. Currently, the cotton spinning mills are facing crisis due to high input costs and subdued demand and thus decided to go slow on production.

In the meeting, it was decided to appoint an agency to study the gravity of the situation, prepare a memorandum, and send to the government.
