Rich heritage of handwoven collection, will be showcased at the Indian Handlooms and Textiles Day, Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2015 to be held on August 27. Organizers of the Lakme Fashion Week announced the launch of their initiative titled Reinvent Banaras' for the revival of Banaras handlooms along with designer-politician Shaina NC here on Wednesday.

Chiara Vigo, the only woman in the world who lives in a remote village in Sardinia, Italy still weaves sea silk made from Byssus - a fine filament produced by large molluscs under the sea, better known as the silk of the sea. Pakistani raw cotton is presently being traded at an average discount of 13 cents per pound in the international market due to lack of quality-based pricing system and non practicing of cotton standardization system, according to official sources.

Analysis of the current price differential vis-à-vis international market (Cotlook index A) and Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) shows it is over 16 cents per pound for 13 million bales - total $780 million, hence this price loss would be manifold in value added textile goods, the officials maintained.

The idea of creating fibre from gelatine dates back more than one hundred years, a fibre with similar properties to merino wool has been created by a PHD student Stössel at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich from gelatine gathered from slaughterhouse waste which included skin, bone and tendons.

Stössel discovered that adding an organic solvent to an aqueous gelatine solution resulted in a formless mass that he was able to press into an elastic thread.

ACIMIT records increase in Italian textile machinery order for 2Q 2015

The Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) has recorded a 15% increase in orders of Italian textile machinery for the second quarter of 2015 over the same period of last year. The value of the orders index for this period amounts to 99.4 points. Italy remains under observation, but is showing sure signs of a recovery – domestic orders have risen by 7% compared to the second quarter of 2014, the association reports.

Orders have made a definitive move in foreign markets, a 21% increase over the same quarter for 2014, marking a fourth consecutive period of growth.
