Cheap cotton and automation is pushing textile industry in US South

In China, manufacturing wages adjusted for productivity have almost tripled over the last decade, to an estimated $12.47 an hour last year from $4.35 an hour in 2004. China’s surging labor and energy costs are weakening its competitiveness in manufacturing, according to the Boston Consulting Group.

Boston Consulting has estimated that for every $1 required to manufacture in the United States, it costs 96 cents to manufacture in China. Yarn production costs in China are now 30 percent higher than in the United States, according to the International Textile Manufacturers Federation.

India’s manmade fibre yarn export continue to fall

There has been a continuous decline in the export of 100 man-made fibre yarns in June particularly that of polyester and viscose yarns. In June, 5.57 million kg of man-made spun yarn were exported, comprising 2.58 million kg of polyester yarn, 1.83 million kg of viscose yarn and 0.90 million kg of acrylic yarn. Polyester yarn and viscose yarn exports were down by 25 per cent and 26 per cent in value respectively during the month, whereas acrylic yarn export picked up substantially by 7 per cent in May with volumes gaining 28 per cent.

Cotton yarn export rises this June

In June 2015, India exported cotton yarn to 72 countries with volumes at 92 million kg which was worth US$275 million (INR1,740 crore). The average unit price realization was at US$2.98 a kg, down US cent 1 from previous month and US cents 54 down from the same month a year ago. The largest importer of cotton yarn from India was China, followed way behind by Bangladesh and Egypt. The top three together accounted for more than 60 per cent of cotton yarn with combined volume at 60 million kg worth US$170 million.

Shahbander to help Egyptian textile makers connect online

To help modernize the textile industry in Egypt, siblings Fatma, Mahmoud and Mohamed El Esnawy after graduating from AUC Venture Labs founded Egyptian startup Shahbander in 2013. They wanted to connect, via a website, factories with clients who wish to buy finished products. Shahbander was Fatma’s idea. After she unsuccesfully tried to help some friends find textile products online, she decided to branch out of the corporate life and start her own business and, using her four years experience in web development and design.

Indian exporters gets GSP extension from US govt finally

Indian exporters, after an 18 months prolonged wait finally gets extension for generalised system of preference (GSP) from the US government on Tuesday. The US government has renewed GSP benefits for Indian exporters, retrospectively from August 2013 till December 2017, enabling duty-free entry of 3,500 product lines which exported in July 2013.

The move is expected to benefit exporters of textiles, engineering, gems and jewellery, and chemical products, among others, as their biggest market is the US. It is likely to increase the quantum of exports into the US markets.

Kenyan govt to revive textile industry with plan to boost cotton farmers

Following the recent US government extension of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) for 10 years, under which Kenyan textiles trade in the American market. The Kenyan government has taken the first steps to revive the textile industry with plans to give cotton farmers 750 tonnes of certified seed this year.

In the short term, the government, through the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority (Affa), will provide 50 tonnes of seed for free to cotton growers by end of August, with the condition that farmers commit to provide land for cotton farming expansion.

Maharashtra govt invites investors to invest in Nandgaon mega textile park

Iranian researcher Dr. Shila Shahidi and faculty member at the Islamic Azad University of Arak has introduced a new method by which polyester fabrics could be dyed more efficiently through plasma surface activation.

The method is aimed at tackling the problems in traditional dyeing methods, such as weak dyeability, high-temperature, excessive use of water, and discharge of several chemical additives.

The method introduced in this work comprises the formation of functional groups on the surfaces of the polyester fabrics by using atmospheric pressure plasma.
