Fall in Turkish cotton crop to boost import demand

The Turkish cotton to see lower returns compared to other crops such as corn in cotton growing regions seen, the fall in production was the result of lower planting, at 370,000 hectares, down from 430,000 hectares in the previous season according to the Ankara bureau.

The government recently announced that the production bonus paid to farmers was to be raised to 0.65 lira per kilogramme of seed cotton, up from last season's bonus of 0.55 lira. Seed cotton is the unprocessed crop from which cotton fibre is ginned.

Blended yarn price falls in India

In India, 30s (65/35) PV yarn prices were down US cents 3 a kg in the second week of November (due to weak INR) in Indore market.

In Ludhiana, PC 30s (52/48) prices also fell US cents 3 on the week.

Cotton-polyester yarn prices remained unchanged in India but weak currency was advantageous for exporters as prices in US$ terms moderated.

However, export demand was slowing down, particularly from China where the market was almost saturated.

Business prospects of the country’s largest man-made fabric (MMF) wholesale market Surat affected due to heavy rains and floods in parts of Andra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. Due to cancellation of many trains and transport services, Surat textile traders are forced to call back almost all the textile parcels moving towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The buyers in Tamil Nadu place orders for saris and dress materials and other polyester fabric for Pongal festival celebrated on January 14 every year. The orders start flowing in with the end of Diwali festival.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last Cabinet meeting evinced keen interest and talked about technology upgradation funds scheme (Tufs). Tufs was launched in early 1990s to boost investment into the textiles sector. Under the scheme, five percent of the total investment for technology upgradation is compensated by the government.

The Tufs scheme was touted to be a great success, attracting massive investment and helping revive the textiles sector was discontinued two years ago due to lack of initiatives of the previous government.
