Vietnam need to be cautious over licensing FDI textile, dyeing projects

As per the Foreign Investment Agency report, so far this year out of the $11 billion worth of foreign direct investment (FDI) poured into Vietnam; $3.5 billion went to textile and garment projects due to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). The investments in the textile and garment industry have been increasing so sharply that this has raised concern.

The United States has raised issue over increase in incentive by Indian government to support exports of several products which includes textile while expanding the scope of the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) this October. The Indian government has included exports of cotton fabrics, both woven and knitted, and made-ups to leading markets including African countries under the MEIS.

Polyester yarn price rolls over in China while declines in India

In the first week of November, offers of spun polyester yarns in China were stable with mainstream offers for 32s and 45s rolling over in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, with the latter seeing better sales than other specs.

In Qianqing, offers were range bound and the transaction volume was not large enough.

Spinners fear a possible decline in export demand, particularly from the US thus, traders had no intention to build up inventories either.

PTA price regains in Asia

In the first week of November, Asian PTA marker partially regained US$9 a ton both CFR China and Southeast CFR.

In China, suppliers kept offers unchanged, and sellers held back selling interest at below US$600 a ton.

Yisheng Petrochemical kept daily cash-based price for PTA unchanged at US$640 a ton while Hengli Petrochemical issued self-lifting offers at US$630-635 a ton.

Purified terephthalic acid prices rose in Asian markets that week to end at a two-week high as plant shutdowns limited availability while rebound was seen as limited amid weakness downstream.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta speaking at the launch of Uasin Gishu county infrastructure machines in Eldoret, said that the government is set to invest Ksh600m to revive the Rift Valley Textile factory in Eldoret which would help create job opportunities for the youth.

Kenyatta further said that developing the country without discrimination was his main priority, despite the latest opinion poll outcome indicating that a majority of Kenyans were dissatisfied with his administration.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in order to improve production of the cash crop to feed the textile industry has introduced new pest-resistant cotton varieties - Round Up Flex (RRF) is a trait tolerant to glyphosate and the Roundup Ready Flex/Bollgard 2 herbicides -- are also tolerant to glyphosate in addition to offering insect protection, and are those currently being tried for the farmers within the savannah ecological zones.

Interest equalisation scheme to help textile sector and boost exports

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given approval for interest equalisation scheme (earlier called Interest Subvention Scheme) on pre and post shipment rupee export credit with effect from April 1, 2015 for five years which is welcomed by the textile units.

According to regional chairman of Federation of Indian Export Organisations, A. Sakthivel, who is also the president of Tirupur Exporters Association was of the opinion that the scheme had come at an appropriate time when the apparel exports registered negative growth in August and September on a year-to-year basis.

The Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC) has welcomed the initiative taken by the Central Government to boost the exports of textiles made of Man-made fibres for B&C group of countries under the MEIS Scheme. In the original policy issued in April 2015 there was no incentive for export of such textiles for Africa and Latin American countries falling under the B&C category. While this will be a definite booster for increasing our export of textiles to non-conventional markets, few items have skipped the attention of the authorities.
