Asian MEG prices jumped US$35 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of January. Mono ethylene glycol markets in China extended their gains early that week amid bullish market outlook post-Lunar New Year and concerns about tighter supply in February. Prices were up on the week although the market was quiet as the main Chinese market was off for the Lunar New Year holidays.

In US, MEG spot climbed to a fresh 18-month high as February contracts are expected higher with continued pressure from rising Asian pricing. Spot MEG rose US cent 1.25 per pound on the week.

Asian paraxylene prices rose US$24.33 a ton CFR Taiwan/China in the in the last week of January. February paraxylene contract price was settled at an increase of US$50 a ton from January.

Paraxylene prices were up in Asian markets were at 18-month highs as regional supply was constrained by production issues, while market sentiment remained bullish as February Asian contract prices settlement was up from January.

Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Forum Ihsan ul Haq stated that Department of Plant Protection (DPP) halted cotton imports from India via the Wagah border crossing amid rising tensions between the two countries. However, the ban has been lifted after period of eight months and Pakistani authorities have permitted import of cotton via Wagah Border Crossing.

Pakistan resumed cotton imports from India via Wagah border crossing after period of eight months. But there has been a significant drop in interest of Pakistani mills owners in Indian cotton amid unusual hike in price.

Phutti (seed cotton) prices also came down and were being quoted in the range of 3,300 to 3,350 per 40 kilograms. However, reports from cotton fields suggested that very little phutti has left for picking.

Brokers said that leading spinners are currently preoccupied in payments against their imports and were conspicuous by their absence.
