NFW introduces biobased alternative to traditional rubber outsoles

Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), based in Peoria, Illinois, has introduced Pliant footwear outsoles made entirely from bio-based natural rubber. These outsoles are designed as a plastic-free alternative to conventional materials used in footwear.

This new outsole compound is fully bio-based and aims to replace petroleum-based rubber commonly used in shoes. It is part of NFW’s broader effort to develop materials that can perform well under demanding conditions.

Bio-based outsoles have often been seen as less durable and offering lower grip compared to traditional rubber. However, NFW states that Pliant PCS overcomes these limitations by delivering strength and traction comparable to standard rubber. The material does not use petrochemicals, plastics, or harmful additives. It can also be easily adopted by brands without major changes to existing supply chains, as it is available both as a raw compound and as ready-to-use outsoles.

Steve Zika, CEO of Natural Fiber Welding, said that the material has been designed to meet industry performance standards without the usual compromises associated with bio-based options. He added that Pliant PCS offers strong durability, reliable grip, and a supply model that fits current manufacturing processes in the footwear industry.
