Anti-dumping duty may be imposed on silk exported to India from China

The Indian government to protect silk domestic industry from cheap in-bound shipments of mulberry raw silk from neighbouring country, China is likely to impose anti-dumping duty of $1.85 (approx. Rs.122) per kg. The directorate general of anti-dumping and allied duties (DGAD) during its investigation has concluded that “mulberry raw silk of grade 3A and below” has been exported to India from China below its normal value and due to which, the domestic industry has suffered “material injury”.

It’s impacting the operations of textile companies as cheap pirated textiles make original textile designs manufactured in Ghana relatively expensive.

There were about 20 textile companies which employed about 25,000 in the 1980s. But currently there is a remnant of just four textile companies employing fewer than 2,000 people, battling to stay in business amid a myriad of challenges.

With majority of textile mill-owners staying busy with year-end closing activities trade turnover of cotton remained at two months low at 3,200 bales (of 155 kilogram each), said dealers on Saturday.

The Karachi Cotton Association reported traders bought 3,200 bales at Rs4,900-5,500/maund (37.324 kilogram) as compared to 11,635 bales bought at Rs4,900-5,600/maund on the previous working day (Wednesday).

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Company Ltd (SNGPL) following the directions on Thursday from Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar restores gas supply for four hours a day basis to Punjab based textile industry, said industry sources. The SNGPL would supply 60 MMCFD LNG at the cost of $9 per MMBTU against the industry demand from both spinners and weavers asking for LNG supply at the rate of $8.5 per MMBTU.

Korea likely to suffer losses of 15.5 trillion won ($13.3 billion) in its export of parts and materials over 10 years failing to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, a think tank said on Thursday.

According to the Korea Economic Research Institute report, Korea's exports of parts and materials to the United States are estimated to drop $11.3 billion in terms of added value, for 10 years after the TPP goes into effect, if the U.S.-led free trade agreement abolishes all import duties among its signatories.

Chairman of Salem Yarn Colouring Park Private Limited, A Alagesan, in a petition sent to the Chief Minister stated that dyers have been facing effluent related problems and set up CETP is the only solution. At present, within the textile sector, only silk farming is covered under the job scheme (MGNREGS) under which workers are provided the mandatory wage in the range of Rs159-241 day, depending on states and Union territories, for 100 days a year.
