AP govt finalizes debt waiver norms for weavers

The Andhra Pradesh government finalizes the debt waiver norms for handloom and powerloom weavers. The programme would cover loans disbursed to individual weavers and weaver groups that were outstanding as on March 31, 2014. Individual loans availed by weavers, group loans, and loans of powerloom units below 5 HP and availing the 50 percent power subsidy scheme would be eligible for the waiver.

But members who have availed the benefit of debt redemption as a member of DWCRA/MEPMA or other self-help group would not be eligible under the scheme.

The Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute (ETIDI) on Thursday said that the country’s textile industry is presently facing shortage of raw cotton, to address the problem it has been decided to import pest resistant improved cotton variety.

Sileshi Lemma, Director General of ETIDI, said that a study meant to address the shortage has been conducted and importing improved variety was taken as a solution.

The country has already approved a proclamation which offers permission for the importation of cotton variety.
