At a workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City last week. Dr Nguyen Tien Dung, principal of the Law-Economics University, during his speech said that Vietnam has the lowest level of development in the 12 Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) nations but Vietnam is seen as the country that will benefit the most to get the biggest benefits from the TPP, compared with other participating nations, and this will be a great chance for the country to boost its exports and join the global supply chain.

The State Industries Department has given approval for setting up Rs11 crore apparel park at Angamaly which is expected to boost business at the Garments Cluster by upto 300 percent. Pakistan, the neighbouring country has so far imported over 13 lakh bales worth Rs 2,000 crore from India is now banking on Gujarat, the largest cotton production state that accounts for more than 7 lakh bales worth over Rs1,000 crore to meet its requirement as it faces a substantial drop in cotton production.

Textile Commissioner, Kavita Gupta speaking at the inauguration of joint technological conference of textile research associations said that textile industry need to focus on reviving technology and skills to bring the productivity levels of the industry at global standards and reinstate its higher share in the global trade.

She further said that the future of textile industry is going to be technical textiles. In the last five years, there had been 20 percent growth year-on-year in this segment. The sector should aim to be 40 percent of the country’s textile industry.

TN power loom units demand reduction of VAT on cotton yarn

The Central Sales Tax on the yarn is two percent, while in Tamil Nadu; the Value Added Tax (VAT) is five percent on cotton yarn. Further, fabric is exempted from VAT here. With the high VAT rate on cotton yarn, there is evasion of duty by several powerloom units. They bill the yarn as hank yarn or as fabric to avoid duty.

The Tamil Nadu power loom unit owners have appealed to the State Government to reduce VAT on cotton yarn to two percent.
