Togas House of Textiles, luxury Greek textile brand opened its store in downtown Greenwich with pillows made from goose down and the wool of Tibetan camel hair, Egyptian cotton towels and fine silk sheets adorn the plush interior of the new store.

The century-old company chose Greenwich for its first storefront in the United States, and the luxury brand is now open for business since its soft opening in January with a formal launch planned.

Dull trading prevailed at the cotton market on Thursday on slow buying owing to depressed demand for cotton yarn and fabric. The spot rates remained firm at Rs6,650/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,127/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also remained unchanged at Rs6,785/maund and Rs7,272/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

A group of Korean businessmen led by Simon Bake and Philop Park visited Provincial Governor Yevgeny "Bambi" Emano last Wednesday, February 22, to express their intent in helping develop potential projects of the Provincial Government as they are set to pour a multi-million peso investment to businesses in Misamis Oriental, one of which is the booming silk industry.

Nicole Managbanag, Provincial Information Officer, said that the Korean businessmen are not only looking at investing in the silk industry but also in the province's health, infrastructure, and agriculture sectors.

Pakistan’s textile and clothing exports decline by 1.30 percent to $1.064 billion in January on a year-on-year basis, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Product-wise details show that the exports of readymade garments dropped 3.60pc while those of knitwear declined 3.44pc and towels fell 1.36pcin January. The fall in exports was mainly driven by value-added products.

The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has organized a three-day long Surat International Textile Expo (SITEX) to encourage the textile sector in Surat and South Gujarat region and to create ‘Brand Surat’.

Chairman of SGCCI's exhibition committee, Praful Shah said that around 80 percent of the textile machinery manufacturers participating in the SITEX event are from the city. They have organized a series of seminars, fashion shows and buyers-sellers meet during the three-day long event.

Polyester yarn price climbs in Asian markets

In Shengze, offers for 32s polyester yarn were stable in the second week of February. In Qiangqing, 32s weaving yarn was up US cents 9 a kg on the week.

Polyester spun yarn prices were up in China reflecting the surge in PSF cost. Offers in Shengze market were kept steady amid thin transaction while in Qiangqing offers were raised, with 45s selling better. Most producers are yet to resume operation completely while there were sporadic enquiries and transactions.

PTA price inches up in Asia

Asian PTA prices inched up US$10 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast Asia in the second week of February. In China, mainstream offers mostly picked up US$5 a ton on the week.

Yisheng Petrochemical’s selling price surged US$5 a ton while Hengli Petrochemical raised self-lifting offers by US$5 a ton on the week.

Purified terephthalic acid markets in Asia were mainly in correction that week as paraxylene prices moved up quickly with two units in Japan and South Korea shutting down before holiday due to some reasons.

Drop in cotton prices in India owing to heavy speculation

Domestic cotton prices have dropped by nearly R500 per quintal to trade to around R5,400-5,500 a quintal from R6,000 around 10 days ago owing to heavy speculation in the futures trade and MCX in this period despite the global rates remaining steady, according to top officials of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI).

Farmers who were holding onto Kapas in anticipation of better prices will now start to bring in the commodity into the market on the fear of prices coming down, said M M Chokalingam, CMD-in-charge, CCI.
