H&M working towards ending exploitation in garment factories by 2018

Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), Swedish fashion retailer in a bid to curb labour exploitation in its main supply factories across the world by 2018 has planned to elect committees and proper pay structures for workers.

Elin Astrom, head of H&M's Sustainability Program in India, said that the clothing firm was aware of the exploitation of workers in the garment industry and was working on several initiatives with its main suppliers to improve worker conditions.

Pakistan cotton market recovers part of the recent losses with renewed buying interest on Wednesday but at the lower level. However, the market still remained devoid of much-needed trading activity.

Cotton prices after touching a peak level came under correction on profit-selling but now once again started bouncing back on renewed buying interest, brokers said.

Sluggish off-take of cotton yarn and textile products are dampening sentiment but some needy spinners rushed to replenish their stocks to meet their immediate needs.

Indonesia’s domestic market continues to be dominated by illegal imported textile product. The origin of around 16.7 percent of all textile product consumption could not be traced. The textile and garment products that were illegally available throughout 2016 has reached 31,000 tons, said Secretary General of the Synthetic Manufacturers Association of Indonesia (Apsyfi), Redma Wirawasta.

ASF prices soar in China, stable in India

In China, medium-length fiber and cotton-type staple ASF prices rose US cents 4 a kg in the second week of February. ASF offers for Taiwan origin 3D bright ASF tow gained US cents 7 a kg at the upper end on the week.

Acrylic staple fibre prices increased on soaring acylonitrile prices and given low inventory, some specs turned hard to get, and in turn some downstream mills were worried on buying adequate raw materials. Downstream demand is sound, and may further improve with some mills in China resume operations next week.

In Pakistan, 1.2D ASF prices rolled over during the week.

Acrylonitrile prices surge amid turnaround season

In the second week of February, Asian acrylonitrile CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia prices jumped 3-5% on the week. Asahi Kasei nominated ACN contract price for February which was up US$130 a ton CFR Far East from January. In India, ACN prices surged US$250 a ton on the week.

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets surged ahead of turnaround season in the second quarter and looming maintenance limited supply. Feedstock propylene cost also rose supporting downstream derivatives.

MEG price falls in Asia, US

Asian MEG prices declined US$27 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of February. Mono ethylene glycol prices fell in Asian markets sending cues to other regions. However, it saw support from tight avails on turnaround as margin sank ending two weeks of steady gains by falling sharply to the lowest level since 21 December 2016.

In China, MEG markets were under fluctuation. Taiwan's Nan Ya Plastics plans to restart its 360,000 a ton a year No. 2 MEG plant in Mailiao early March after annual maintenance.
