Two Sri Lankan textile companies commence production line in Ethiopia

The grand production inauguration ceremony of the Hawassa Industrial Park in Ethiopia was held on 20th June 2017 with the participation of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, senior Ministers of the government, Ambassadors, senior government officials and the company owners etc.

The Industrial Park has attracted 18 leading global apparel and textile companies which includes the two Sri Lankan companies namely Isebella Socks Manufacturing PLC and Hirdaramani Garments PLC who commenced their product operation.

Textiles 2017, to be India's first mega trade event in the sector with 15,000 participants from all over the world. It is aimed at significantly uplifting India's textile industry, which employs more than 45 million people directly, contributes to 10% of manufacturing production, 2% of India's GDP and 13% of the country's export earnings.

The event will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar on 30 June to convey the importance given to the textile industry which has tremendous job generation potential.

India's garment exports expected to touch USD20 bn in FY18

India's garment exports clocked 15 percent growth at USD17 billion in FY17 now following improved market conditions in US and other markets, the garment exports are expected to register a 15-18 percent growth to touch USD 20 billion during the current fiscal.

The US market, which consists of 30 percent market share is doing reasonably well and they are also looking at good exports potential to South America, European, Middle East and Japanese markets this year, said Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) president Rahul Mehta.

Mumbai is all set to host the largest apparel trade show in India, the 65th National Garment Fair in July with the participation of around 1,000. The production of grey fabrics has taken a hit in Surat, the country's largest man-made fabric (MMF) sector with production decreasing by almost 55 percent in the last fortnight due to the agitation by textile traders against Goods and Services Tax on fabrics. The textile traders keeping their shops shut for three more days following the all India strike announced by traders from Tuesday, according to Industry Sources.

The daily production of polyester fabrics is pegged at 4 crore meters per day. At present, the powerloom sector is producing less than 2 crore metres per day.

Malaysian fashion and lifestyle concept retail chain Kioda is planning to enter India, in a joint venture with franchise solutions company Franchise India Holdings Ltd, a top Kioda executive said.

Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City has set targets of meeting 80-90 percent of Vietnam's demand for garments and textiles by 2020, and supplying 100 percent of accessories for the country's garment industry, the municipal authorities said.

Ho Chi Minh city will build large centres for designing fashion, trading garment, textile material and accessories to become the country's garment, textile and accessory hub.
