Post GST, cheaper imported apparel likely to increase

The industrial hub of Ludhiana is apprehensive that post-GST, there will be an increase in imports from countries such as Bangladesh and China, where the cost of manufacturing is lower due to the availability of cheaper labour. This cheaper imported garments will negatively impact the Indian Textile and Apparel Industry.

In the case of apparel imports, the government had earlier levied the Special Additional Duty (SAD) as a protection for the domestic players. With the GST, this duty protection stands removed and imported garments would be 5-6 per cent cheaper, sources said.

To promote cooperation between Pakistan and Chinese textile and apparel companies, The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PRGMEA) and China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textile and Apparel (CCCT) had signed MoU in March 2016. The two associations have decided to give a practical shape to the MoU.

It is the first time that a Pakistani garment sector body signed such an agreement with the overseas stakeholders for strengthening mutual trade of garment and textile.

Cotton trading lacked buying interest

Cotton trading on Monday lacked buying interest and closed easy in line with the global trend. Cotton market was adversely affected by slow arrivals of phutti (seed cotton).

Moreover, a crisis-ridden textile industry is cautious and seems to be in no hurry to build up stock from the new cotton crop, they maintained.

Recent rains across the country also hampered cotton picking both in Sindh and Punjab which restricted the availability of cotton.

Nylon price inches up in China

In China, FDY70D/24F SD prices rose US cents 3 a kg in the third week of June, while FDY40D inched up US cents 2 a kg on the week. DTY prices were flat.
Nylon filament yarn prices marched higher although nylon chip cost eased a bit while caprolactum prices remained flat. Downstream converters maintained stable operation and demand was moderate with off season drawing near.

Warp knitting, weaving and AJ covering sectors operated stably while circular‐knitting mills and lacing mills were still operating at half their capacities, implying modest demand for nylon yarn.

Caprolactum price remains range-bound in Asia

Asian caprolactum markers, the SE and FE were flat in the third week of June, while high‐end contract price was offered stable on the week. In China, spot liquid and solid goods offers rolled over during the week.

Caprolactum prices were steady that week on the back of range‐bound benzene and supply constraint easing somewhat. Demand remained modest as run rates at polymerization units and yarn makers were at 75%, with no change in inventory levels. In contracts, both Sinopec and Fibrant raised their June contract nominations bring them to a same level.

At the event designer Payal Khandwala said that handwoven textiles must be incorporated into the industry in a more responsible way, one that is sustainable and long term. That requires commitment and a belief in these products and long term support.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant at the concluding day of Textiles India 2017 held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat highlighted the importance of exports in the textile sector and the ease of doing business in India. He said that if India has to grow rapidly, it cannot grow without exports. They still import a lot of raw material like laces, buttons, elastics etc, which makes production expensive for the (clothing) manufacturers.

Blended yarn price rolls over in Asian markets

In China, PC (65/35) 32s yarn prices were steady in Zhejiang in the third week of June, while 45s PC combed yarn prices rolled over on the week. PV 32s were also flat but all were down US cent 1 a kg due to weak Yuan.

Blended yarn prices were relatively steady across China, India and Pakistan with PSF and VSF prices bottoming out in recent weeks. In China, yarn import prices have begun declining due to a sharp drop in cotton futures thus, the difference between domestic and import prices have narrowed down, but still very wide enough to the detriment of yarn importers.
