Mali to focus on direct cotton exports to Indian textile industry

Mali produces long staple cotton and only 5 percent of it is processed in that country and the rest is exported. Recently about 20 percent of Mali’s cotton is consumed by India, said Niankoro Yeah Samake, Mali’s Ambassador in India.

Mali, which produces eight lakh tonnes of cotton a year, is looking at direct exports of cotton to the Indian textile industry. However, most of the trade is through foreign companies. So, there are opportunities to trade directly. Currently, Europe and China are the biggest buyers of the West African nation’s cotton.

Pakistan and Turkey’s Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be signed on August 14, for enhancing the bilateral trade between two countries. The seventh round of negotiations between the two countries on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was milestone to reach the final agreement.

Secretary Ministry of Commerce Younas Dhaga led Pakistan’s delegation in negotiation on FTA between Pakistan and Turkey. Pakistan and Turkey discussed the specific sectors including textile sector during the negotiation, a senior official of Ministry of Commerce said.

The handloom weavers in Salem have urged the Centre to exempt all textile products from the GST as it would only hike the price of textiles, in turn it would lead to stagnation of textiles at the production centres.

The office-bearers of the Jaari Kondalampatti Pure Silk Textiles Producers Association presented a petition to the District Collector on Saturday urging him to recommend exemption for all textile goods from GST. Only exemption from GST would protect this industry, the petition said.

Polyester yarn market remains flat amid moderate sales

In China, offers for 32s polyester yarn in Shengze were flat in the third week of June. In Zhejiang, 32s weaving yarn prices were steady during the week.

Polyester spun yarn prices were stable in China as offers for 32s and 45s in Shengze rolled over and sales volume was moderate. There was heavy bearish mood due to fall in crude oil prices, and cost support from feedstock market moderated. Spinners were watching price trend raw material and the number of orders from downstream producers in coming weeks.

PTA price sobers in Asia, Europe

Asian PTA prices sobered US$10 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast Asia in the third week of June. In China, offers for bonded goods were down US$2 a ton, and discussions for nearby-month cargoes were down US$7 a ton on the week.

Purified terephthalic acid prices continued to inch down throughout the week in Asian market, posting a 30-week low. Cost support weakened as paraxylene values kept weakening while naphtha fluctuated with a slight drop, prompting PTA market to decline as well.

Under the Angola’s production recovery programme its first cotton harvest in the provinces of Malanje and Kwanza Sul is scheduled for July with a symbolic result of 200 tonnes. Angola’s cotton production, following independence, in 1975 had virtually ceased due to the civil war, which ended in 2002.

The Ministry of Agriculture staffer and coordinator of the cotton production recovery programme, Carlos Canza, said that an area of 242 hectares was planted, and each hectare will produce one ton of seed cotton, which is insufficient to meet the needs of the textile industry in the country.
