The new FET-500 gel spinning systems are designed to address the challenges and provide a flexible and consistent process that can produce high-quality fibres using less than 100 grams of polymer and avoid the harsh chemicals traditionally used in gel spinning. This is achieved through a patent-pending process that employs supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) as an eco-friendly solvent, offering new flexibility for laboratory and pilot-scale operations.
Gel spinning typically starts with extrusion, but the washing and drawing phases determine the final yarn’s performance. FET’s unique technology replaces toxic solvents like hexane and DCM with CO₂, which effectively extracts carrier oil without harming the polymer. CO₂ is a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective solvent that dissolves oils efficiently while preserving fibre quality.
