Bangladesh plans to boost jute production and sustainability

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-05-01 15:58:16 – Bangladesh

The government of Bangladesh has introduced a detailed and multi-level plan to increase jute production and improve its quality. The initiative also aims to ensure fair prices for farmers and reposition the country’s jute sector as a competitive and sustainable industry.

Speaking in parliament at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Minister of Textiles and Jute, stated that the strategy includes short, medium, and long-term actions. These plans are aligned with the government’s election commitments.

The strategy focuses on strengthening the entire jute value chain through a coordinated approach. Key areas include increasing the production and supply of high-yield jute varieties and quality seeds, encouraging the use of modern farming techniques, and improving farmers’ skills through structured training programs.

One important step in this plan is a feasibility study titled “Production and Distribution of Advanced Technology-based Jute and Jute Seeds.” The study will help guide the development of a larger project, which is expected to begin in November 2026.

According to the minister, the upcoming project will focus on using advanced agricultural technologies, improving access to quality seeds, and promoting cost-effective farming practices. These efforts are expected to increase productivity, improve fiber quality, and raise farmers’ income levels.
