Cotton prices recover as spinners indulged in fresh buying

With spinners getting indulged in forward buying amid short supply position, prices recovered on the cotton market on Friday, dealers said. In the ready business, around 5000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 4500-6000 while in the Punjab, prices showed no change at Rs 3100 and Rs 3400. The official spot rate recovered majorly from Rs 100 to Rs 5,650.

Eco Smart Garment Indonesia joint venture between Pan Brothers, one of Indonesia's largest textile and apparel exporters and Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi for the construction of three garment factories is on track and expected to start production early next year.

The construction setback at Eco Smart Garment Indonesia was only for a short period and [the plants] will be operational in the first half of 2017, said Pan Brothers.

The Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) has approved the establishment of a training institution called Textile and Clothing Institute of Botswana (TCIB) the first of its kind in the country which will give a boost the local clothing and textile sector as shortage of skill has had a negative impact on the field for many years.

Shahid Ghafoor, president of the Botswana Textile and Clothing Association, said that TCIB was offering one-year certificate courses in clothing manufacturing in a wide variety of skills.

Vietnam textile and garment industry believed to be the biggest beneficiary from TPP and other free trade agreements (FTAs), are experiencing tough days as orders have moved from Vietnam to Myanmar and Laos. The water shortage in Sircilla has only compounded the woes of the textile processing units already in crisis due to multifaceted problems. This has directly affected the workers whose chances of getting regular work has already shrunk. Sircilla, once the richest town in Karimnagar district with handlooms, power looms and textile processing units whirring round-the-clock. There were over 100 units a decade ago, but hardly 70 are surviving now with only 25 to 30 functioning with business hardly meeting sustenance, said T. Damodar, a processing unit owner.
