First meeting of the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) for the season 2016-17 was held in the chair with Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry Amir M. Khan Marwat to assess the area and volume of current cotton crop in the country. The CCAC who had initial estimated cotton production at 14.1 million bales has been slashed by 20 percent to 11.27 million bales for the current season on Tuesday.

At MAGIC 2016, the world’s largest fashion exhibition held twice annually and attended by professionals from more than 80 countries. Nine Peruvian companies participated in the event. The most demanded Peruvian products were t-shirts, shirts for men, and woven garments for babies.

The majority of buyers who contacted Peruvian exporters were from Canada, United States, and Mexico.

The textile sector of Peru aims to increase their exports to the United States. In addition, they wish to position and strengthen their presence of cotton and alpaca industry in the US.

Asian paraxylene prices lost US$12 a ton FOB Korea and CFR Taiwan/China in the last week of August. Paraxylene market rolled back previous week’s gain as prices declined due to weak demand emanating from PTA plants shut down in China ahead of G20 summit. Meanwhile, mixed xylene spot edged up on upstream firmness while September-October flipped into backwardation.

In Europe, paraxylene market was mixed with prices declining opening the week only to partially regain before weekend. Paraxylene prices gave back US$5.50 a ton on the week.

The Ugandan government has in the past proposed a ban on importation of second hand clothes, commonly known as mivumba, in order to protect and promote the local textile industry. But the US embassy expressed concern over ban on the importation of second hand clothes as it would have drastic effects on both Uganda and the US because of the significance of trading in used clothing.

For now, the ban remains on paper and has never been implemented. Most Ugandans can't afford new clothes and depend on used-clothes for their clothing needs.

The XII International Cotton and Textile Fair to take place on October 12-132 in the capital of Uzbekistan. Dagestan businessmen have been invited to participate in the event, the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade RD reports.
