US-based charity launch project focus on spinning mills in India, Bangladesh

Run by the California-based charity As You Sow, the Responsible Sourcing Network (RSN) on Sept. 1 launched a project focusing on mills in India and Bangladesh that altogether employ hundreds of thousands of workers.

Patricia Jurewicz, RSN's director said that located in the middle of the supply chain, spinning mills are uniquely positioned to identify cotton produced with forced labour and prevent it from entering corporate supply chains.

At present the potential of technical textiles industry of India remains largely untapped. But with the growing industrialization, increasing access to medical care and huge infrastructure spending is expected to drive growth of technical textile segment which is expected to reach Rs 1.58-lakh crore mark in the ongoing fiscal, grow at a rate of 20 percent, a top Central Government official said today.

He directed the authority that the Quaid-e-Azam Apparel Park project should be completed by professional manner.

Trade activity remains down at cotton market

Trading activity at cotton market remains down on Thursday due to easy supply of Phutti ahead of Eid-ul-Azha holidays, dealers said. According to the market sources, some leading mills did not take interest in fresh buying due to improved supply position and declining demand for cotton yarn.

Dealers said that the official spot rate continued to fall, losing Rs 100 to Rs 5,850. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2800-3050 and in Punjab rates of Phutti were at Rs 2500-2900, as per 40 kg while in ready business, around 14,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5900 and Rs 6100

Polyester yarn prices stabilize in Asian markets

In Shengze, offers for 32s and 45s polyester yarn were stable in the fourth week of August. In Qiangqing, offers for 32s weaving were steady during the week.

Spun polyester yarn prices were relatively stable amid thin transaction in China while offers for some specs were lowered somewhat, and producers did not sell in large batches. Markets weakened with limited deals concluded that week.

Meanwhile, spinning mills in Hangzhou were shut for G20 summit limiting logistics and transportation. In other regions, traders and downstream producers held rigid demand for yarns.

PTA price slips amid thin trade

Asian PTA markers edged down US$2 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast Asia in the fourth week of August. The South Korea/Taiwan marker was also down on the week. In China, offers for nearby-month goods were maintained at US$610-615 a ton that week, and buyers countered offers was at US$605 a ton, with the discussion stalemated. Purified terephthalic acid prices were stable to low in thinly traded week. Most PTA plants in China were shut ahead of G20 Summit in early September, thus deals were low and sporadic.
