The Mauritius government in the wake of Brexit, will be launching the Air Freight Rebate Scheme known as the 'Speed-to-Market' Scheme (STMS) for its textile and apparel segment this month after consultations with the various stakeholders.

STMS will also allow Mauritian textile and apparel exporters to become more competitive vis-à-vis other countries exporting via air freight to Europe.

Spot trades remained thin, so cotton yarn prices are expected to hold stable or move up slightly in the short term.

Cotton prices gain momentum at the cotton market in the process of modest trade activity on Wednesday. The official spot rate moved higher by Rs 50 at Rs 6300, dealers said. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2600-3250 while, in Punjab, phutti rates were at Rs 2800 and Rs 3500, as per 40 kg.

Cotton analyst, Naseem Usman said that nothing is new except sharp rise in the international market, influenced the rates of cotton in the domestic market.

During the Vibrant Gujarat summit, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) for the development of mega textile park at Pinjrat will be signing a memorandum of understanding (Mou) with Gujarat government. The chamber will be signing an MoU with the Gujarat government for allotting 70 lakh square metres of land at Pinjrat near Olpad.

SGCCI president B S Agarwal said that the mega textile park is the dream project and it will change the face of Surat's textile sector.

Maharashtra government to promote the city of Solapur as a major garment hub has decided to set up Rs 300 crore garment park in Solapur The bhoomi pujan (ground breaking ceremony) of the park which would be developed thereon would be held on January 26, said state textile minister Subhash Deshmukh at the inauguration of the three day international exhibition on uniform and textiles held in Solapur.

Pakistan, one of the largest raw cotton exporter to bridge the gap between the production and consumption of raw cotton will have to foot a bill of around $1.58 billion for the import of 4.5 million bales (170kg each) as cotton production is expected to be around 10.54m bales in 2016-17.

Pakistan has been an importer for the last two years. Last year, Pakistan imported around 2.7m bales from India at a cost of $800m. With cotton production clocking up at 15m bales in 2014-15 and 9.5m bales in 2015-16.

With the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) resorting to purchase cotton at commercial rates from different parts of key cotton growing regions in the country, cotton prices have moved up and also improving the market sentiment. Prices have firmed up to R41,500 per candy from the prevailing rates of R38,000 and farmers are now beginning to get better rates from traders, according to top officials of CCI.
