European Commission proposes to restore GSP plus concessions to SL

The European Commission on Wednesday in exchange of the Sri Lankan government's commitment to ratify 27 international conventions on human rights, labor conditions, protection of the environment and good governance has proposed removing of a significant part of the remaining import duties on Sri Lankan products under the General System of Preference Plus (GSP-Plus).

The European Commission said that the removal of customs duties would be accompanied by rigorous monitoring and conditional on continued commitment to sustainable development, human rights and good governance.

Textile Made-ups segment to get additional 10 pc subsidy under ATUFS

The made-ups segment which is the second largest employment generator after apparels in the entire textile value chain will get additional 10 percent capital investment subsidy of up to Rs 20 crore under the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme.

According to the notification from the Textiles Ministry "Every eligible made-ups unit which has availed 15 percent benefit under ATUFS will be paid an additional 10 percent capital investment subsidy on their investment up to an additional maximum cap of Rs 20 crore".

Unifi, US based yarn manufacturer with support from Century Synthetic Fiber Corporation which has become a licensed manufacturer of Repreve, to expand the production of its Repreve recycled fibre into Vietnam.

Repreve is Unifi's flagship brand of recycled fibres made from recycled materials, including plastic bottles. It is used by some of the world's leading apparel brands, including Patagonia, Haggar, and Quiksilver.

Acrylonitrile prices fall in December

Asian marker, the CFR Far East Asia fell 6% in December while it was down 12.1% YoY. Acrylonitrile prices fell in Asia despite rise in feedstock propylene and crude oil values.

In US, acrylonitrile spot was down with propylene, global prices. European acrylonitrile prices fell amid global weakening as Asian prices declined sharply.

European prices plunged 11.8% from November and declined 12.7% YoY while US export assessments was down 16.9% on the month and 6% YoY.

Propylene price climbs in Asia, Europe

Asian marker, FOB Korea was up 8.9% in December while it declined 8.4% YoY, and CFR China rose 9.7% from November while it fell 8.5% YoY.

Propylene prices in Asian markets rose in December as downstream PP makers strengthened while Chinese ports saw congestion.

In Europe, propylene markets were on bullish contract price expectation in January. In US, December propylene offers dropped on the month.

In Europe, CG propylene jumped 6.2% from November while it was down 24.8% YoY. Spot polymer-grade propylene prices in US were down 0.7% on the month.
