The National Development and Reform Commission of China announced late last year that China will offer 30,000 tonnes of cotton per day for sale until the end of August, as Beijing seeks to scale down its large, ageing stockpile.

China's textile mills have worked off cotton inventory in the hope of picking up lower-priced fiber when the government in the world's top textile market resumes annual sales of state reserves on Monday even after getting caught short last year.

An eight-member delegation representing the Australian Cotton Shippers’ Association held meetings in Ludhiana, Mumbai, and Coimbatore between February 27 and March 3 to promote and enhance use of Australian cotton, said Matthew Bradd, chairman of Australian Cotton Shippers’ Association. Australia, which is globally the fifth largest exporter of cotton, is looking at India to emerge as a consistent and major buyer of its commodity.

India is a big market for cotton and spinners in India and they have had good experience with Australian cotton, he said.

The state government of Kolkata has decided to merge the Micro and Small Scale Enterprises (MSSE) and Textiles department with the Large Industries and Enterprises department. India's cotton exports likely will grow 3 percent to 990,000 tonnes in the current year, with production to rise by 2 percent to 5.9 million tonnes, according to projection by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).

World cotton trade is estimated to expand by 3 percent to 8 million tonnes in 2017-18, with China’s import volume set to grow by 11 percent to 1.1 million tonnes for the year. ICAC cites the growth in China's imports to its surging mill use, which continues to outpace its production.
