Bangladesh government is making constant efforts to restore the lost glory of jute, reclaiming its repute of being the country's "golden fibre" as they want to flourish their local products, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the opening of the country's maiden National Jute Day celebrations.

She added that works were underway for modernisation and diversification of jute products to reclaim the lost glory of the fibre which was the only foreign exchange earning sector of Bangladesh.

Normal trading was witnessed at cotton market on Thursday despite availability of little stocks with the ginners. While, the spot rates at the Karachi Cotton Exchange increased Rs50/maund.

The spot rates increased to Rs6,800/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,288/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also rose to Rs6,935/maund and Rs7,433/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

According to an analyst, normal trading was recorded despite as there are talks of new crop, ginners are willing to offload their lint, but they are not ready to sell at lower rates.

Polyester yarn price edges down in China, up in Pakistan

In Shengze, offers for 32s polyester yarn moved down US cents 2 a kg in the last week of February. In Qiangqing, 32s weaving yarn was down US cents 3 a kg on the week.

Polyester spun yarn offers moved down in China on back of poor sales and weakening in line with the fall in PSF prices that week. Offers for spun polyester yarns of some specs weakened somewhat in Shengze market on the back of moderate enquiring and trading sentiment.

PTA price falls in Asia

Asian PTA prices fell US$11 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast Asia in the last week of February. Purified terephthalic acid markets in Asia were under fluctuation that week, prices down amid falling raw material paraxylene cost.

In China, offers were raised beginning of that week only to slightly weaken basically corrected midweek. On Thursday, discussions for PTA edged down as paraxylene market turned weak. Thus, in the first half of that week, PTA markets fluctuated in a narrow range.

Monsanto a biotechnology giant will trial GM cotton using new technology in the Ord Irrigation Scheme this year, which could prove more resistant to thrips, mirids and caterpillars. They are also in talks with Department of Agriculture Western Australia to secure a “tiny” trial plot at Kununurra Research Station.

It plans to grow GM cotton using its pipeline biotechnology Bollgard III, approved for Australian use last year. The new technology is a step up from Bollgard II and includes a new gene, Vip3A, which works with Cry1A and Cry2Ab to produce proteins which kill insects.
