MEG price hits 21-month high in US, down in Asia

Asian MEG prices declined US$23 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of February. Mono ethylene glycol prices tumbled further for the second consecutive week on lower demand and rising stock at Chinese ports.

Falling downstream PET prices also influence MEG markets. In China, MEG domestic market continued to decline notably with spot plunging on Monday to Thursday while weekend saw signs of rebounding.

Paraxylene price declines across all regions

Asian paraxylene prices were down US$4.83 a ton CFR Taiwan/China and FOB Korea in the last week of February. Isomer-grade mixed xylene declined US$15 a ton FOB Korea and CFR Taiwan.

Paraxylene prices in Asian markets were up weekend on the back of firm buying interest but were still down on the week as they declined sharply on Thursday. Meanwhile, paraxylene-mixed xylene spread retreated from 26-month high as isomer-grade mixed xylene rose on weekend. Major suppliers nominated their March contract price above spot numbers.

CeBIT 2017 international exhibition for digital business to take place in Hannover, Germany, this month, Shima Seiki, a leading computerised knitting machine manufacturer, of Wakayama, will participate as part of the Japan Pavilion hosted by Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).

Trading activity remained dull at cotton market on Tuesday as ginners were reluctant to dispose of their stocks at prevailing prices, despite strong demand from spinners. Ginners were demanding higher prices influenced by soaring world cotton prices.

However, spinners were unwilling to pay high prices to avoid compromising their competitive edge. The shortage of quality cotton and limited stocks of unsold cotton with ginners also impacted trading.

The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) spot rates remained unchanged.

India’s overall cotton yarn exports remained under pressure during the current financial year due to sluggish demand from China, despite a robust demand from Bangladesh. The first day of Chinese auction quoted cotton prices between Rs 51,000 and Rs 56,000 a candy (356 kgs) as against Rs 42,000 a candy currently prevailing in most local markets here. This means Chinese cotton is costlier by a wide margin.
