Eldoret-based Rift Valley Textile Mills (Rivatex) East Africa due to acute shortage of raw materials has impacted negatively on their operation capacity, said Prof Kipkurgat, adding that company has invested more than Sh300 million in upgrading its machines to produce materials that meet international standards.

The company was producing an average of 10,00 bales against an annual capacity of 70,000 bales. It is operating below capacity also due to underfunding from the government and absence of foreign donors to sustain its operations.

India Ratings (Ind-Ra) has revised its cotton outlook to stable for the next financial year (2017-18) from negative for the fiscal year 2016-17 following steady input prices, healthy capacity utilization and healthy domestic demand.

Ind-Ra said that the status will stem from fiscal incentives and implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that will improve the industry’s export competitiveness.

In China, offers for ring‐spun 30s weaving yarn in Xiaoshan were flat in the first week of March, while compact siro‐spun 40s yarn in Jiangsu were steady on the week.

Spun viscose yarn markets were stable to weak while prices mostly rolled over from previous week. In China, offers for ring‐spun and siro‐spun yarn were mainly flat. Yarn makers met with more difficulty in liquidating volumes, and some faced piling inventories in recent days.

In Qianqing, PC (65/35) 32s yarn prices rolled over in the first week of March while 45s PC combed yarn prices were up on the week.

Blended yarn markets were benefiting from volatile cotton markets where prices are hating to move down. In China, yarn prices begun rebounding on the import market, which had earlier declined in the last two weeks, particularly from India and Vietnam. Chinese spinners are likely to take advantage of the new rise in import prices, if confirmed in coming days.

Midland, Michigan-based Dow Chemical Co. is nearly done with the massive 1.5 million tons per year ethylene plant construction at south of Houston in Freeport, and commissioning has already begun at the facility, Doug May, Dow's hydrocarbon business president, said.

The company expects the plant to enter service sometime around the middle of the year, May said. The plant is part of a series of projects called the Gulfstream Program, which includes more than $6 billion in petrochemical assets across Texas and Louisiana.
