Surge in cotton prices in domestic market drive textile mills to import

With the jump in cotton prices in the country, there is a spurt in import contract as textile mills have started importing cotton from West Africa and the US as the landed costs are on par with the prevailing domestic market price.

Cotton prices have gone up by Rs 6,000 per candy (a candy is 355kg) or 15.8% since November. Price of the popular Shankar-6 cotton had on an average increased by Rs 2,500 per candy in the past two months and is now trading at Rs 44,000 per candy.

MEG price declines on weak downstream demand

Asian MEG prices declined US$23 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of March. In China, prices went down US$45 a ton early during the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices declined on the week on weak downstream demand as polyester producers skipped buying on ample supply. Meanwhile, traders were heard halting short-selling. Iran's Farsa Chimie plans to restart its 450,000 ton a year MEG plant in Assaluyeh by end March, after it remained shut since mid-February.

Paraxylene price dives across all regions

Asian paraxylene prices dived US$50 a ton CFR Taiwan/China and FOB Korea in the second week of March. Isomer-grade mixed xylene declined US$43 a ton FOB Korea on the week.

Paraxylene prices were driven down in Asian markets amid continuing free-fall in sentiment affected by heavy pressure from bearish futures markets. Upstream isomer-grade mixed xylene also fell week on week in line with lower upstream and downstream markets. Falling crude oil prices further added to the pessimistic market sentiment.
