MEG price gains in Asia, falls in Europe

Asian MEG prices partially regained US$8 a ton CFR China and CFR South East in the first week of April. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes surged up US$10 on the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asian markets partially regained previous week’s loss as downstream demand was seen improving. In China, domestic MEG prices also followed suit, inching up week on week as downstream demand from polyester factories helped bolster buying activity. Prices fluctuated upward early in the week and then fell somewhat at weekend.

Paraxylene price moves up after a recent fall

Asian paraxylene prices were up US$32.33 a ton CFR Taiwan/China in the first week of April. Isomer-grade mixed xylene was dearer by US$18.50 a ton FOB Korea on the week.

Paraxylene prices were up on the week on firmer upstream but the dip at weekend capped the weekly rise. Isomer-grade mixed xylenes prices also rose while orthoxylene spot tumbled due to poor downstream demand amid thin trading indications.

The company has already placed orders with machinery suppliers following successful trials conducted with its own hot washed recycled PET flakes.

Pakistan’s current cotton output of 10.727m bales showing a slight increase of 9.81 percent from last season’s 9.766m bales. This is for the second consecutive season, the country has produced more than 10 million cotton bales.

With lesser area coming under cotton cultivation, the crop size has been shrinking — from 15m bales recorded in cotton season 2013-14 to round 10m bales for the last two seasons.

The new contract, however, will move the supply of polyester cotton products – a staple textile of the workwear industry – back to the UK for the first time in 50 years.

Alsico’s decision to move textile sourcing to its Lancashire neighbour was based on several factors. This included Carrington’s ability to supply products ideally suited to the industrial laundry (workwear rental) sector – Alsico’s largest market.

Archroma US presented the “Earthcolors” technology at the recent international conference of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists held in Wilmington, NC. A collaborative program between Archroma and Cotton Incorporated which resulted in a process to dye cotton with cotton.

Archroma has pioneered the concept of using natural wastes and byproducts such as cotton gin wastes, almond shells, plant byproducts and shoots of rosemary to synthesize dyes to color textiles. The technology originally came from Archroma’s unit in Spain.
