Pak cotton cultivation witnesses 18pc rise in current sowing season

The Pakistan government has fixed a target to cultivate the cotton crop over an area of 3.11 million hectares during the crop season 2017/18 to fulfill the domestic requirements of the commodity, as well as for export purposes, said Dr Khalid Abdullah, cotton commissioner in the ministry of textile industry on Wednesday.

During the current sowing season, Pakistan cotton cultivation witnessed 18 percent increase across the crop growing areas as compared to the sowing during the corresponding period of the last year.

ASF price remains unchanged in Asian markets

Acrylic staple fibre prices remained unchanged in the second week of May amid quiet trading sentiment. With end-use demand weakening, yarn makers faced poor fresh order-intake and showed mute buying interest for acrylic fibers. However, overall inventory level was relatively under control on back of some maintenance shutdowns in China and some majors’ export orders. Jilin Chemical Fiber kept its list prices for May unchanged on the week.

Acrylonitrile price edges down in Asia, up in US

Asian acrylonitrile prices edged down US$5 a ton CFR Far East Asia and CFR South East in the second week of May. In China, offers for offshore cargoes rolled over while Indian ACN was US$50 a ton cheaper on the week.

MEG price moves down on weak futures

Asian MEG prices fell US$21 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of May. Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asian markets declined on weaker futures and traders taking profits early in the week, with both yuan-denominated swaps and US$ -denominated spot cargoes trading sharply lower, especially midweek. In China, MEG market declined in weakness that week and offers moved down all along and rebounded slightly later.

In Europe, MEG spot prices moved sideways as suppliers were unwilling to lower prices although demand remained tepid.

Paraxylene price recovers in Asia

Asian paraxylene prices recovered US$13.34 a ton CFR Taiwan/China and FOB Korea in the second week of May. Isomer-grade mixed xylene prices gained US$13 a ton FOB Korea on the week.

Paraxylene markets in Asia apparently halted price falls seen in the past 5 weeks in which sellers tried to off-load cargoes. The support may have largely come from rising crude prices and expectation of supply shortage resulting from two majors announcing their turnarounds. Yangzi Petchem said it was on track to start a turnaround from end-May and JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy from third week.

Nominal decline seen in Pakistan textile, clothing exports

Pakistan’s textile and clothing recorded a nominal decline in exports mainly due to lower proceeds from raw material and low value-added products, such as cotton yarn and fabrics.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Monday showed the decline in export proceeds to 0.92 percent year-on-year to $10.29 billion in July-April. Exports of value-added products grew during the 10 months in terms of both value and quantity.
