Most weavers in Andhra and Telangana regions work with cotton that is bought from the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC).
B Syama Sundari, convenor of All India Federation of Handloom Organisations said that the Goods and Service Tax has dented another hole in the handloom sector that is still struggling to keep up with the big players in the market.

The 5 percent GST on cotton yarn has proved to be a nightmare for weavers. Nearly 44 lakh families of weavers across the country are affected as the tax on cotton has spiked the price of handloom products.

However, the silkworm industry, a 2000 years old tradition, had been on the decline in the past in Zandajan, but with the help of some foreign NGOs was rescued and strengthened.

The government of Rwandan in a bid to ensure continued duty free access to the US market has began discussion with the United States on the review of the American Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA). Rwanda Development Board Chief Operating Officer, Emmanuel Hategeka said that they are in talks with the US to ensure Rwanda is not locked out of the trade window.

He said that they are talking to their partners in the US as they value their trade and relations with the US and they are doing all that is possible not to be out of cycle and of course they have been engaging on the issue.

Pakistan textile industry has been advised to focus on value addition to compete in the international market as lack of value addition is one of the major reason behind the decline in exports, said Commerce Secretary Younis Dagha on Wednesday while addressing an event hosted by Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

According to Dagha, cost of doing business is higher in Pakistan compared to neighbouring countries, but it is not the only hurdle in exports as they have not played their role in value addition… industrial production remains lower.

Indonesia is Cotton USA's fourth-largest market after China, Turkey and Mexico. Sales in Indonesia range between US$300 million and $600 million a year. This year, according to Cotton Council International (CCI), the export promotion arm of the National Cotton Council, a US industry association promoting the brand Cotton USA is eyeing a 3 percent increase in sales in Indonesia.

CCI Indonesian representative Andy Do said that the target would be achieved by approaching consumers directly to promote the products rather than only approaching businesses, as in the past.

Trading on the cotton market resumed on Tuesday after Eidul Azha holidays, however activity remained dull due to thin attendance of traders. The KCA spot rates remained firm at pre-Eidul Azha level.

Kusama Rajaiah, a Hyderabad based textile technocrat, has developed an innovative way of making silk that does not involve the killing of silkworms. The Ahimsa silk, as Rajaiah calls it, is made by harnessing silk filaments from broken cocoons after the silk moths fly away by piercing them at maturity.

The idea originated after a request from then first lady of India (between 1987 and 1992) Janaki Venkataraman for a silk sari made without killing a silkworm. As thousands of silkworms are killed in order to make a small piece of fabric.
