Weak cotton trading witnessed over dull demand for export

Weak cotton trading activity was witnessed at Rajkot, Gujarat as cotton prices remained unchanged and domestic mills were buying only as per their requirements as demand for export was seen dull.

Kapas or raw cotton declined marginally on lower buying from ginners. Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton was traded at ₹33,100-200 per candy of 356 kg.

About 45,000-50,000 bales (of 170 kg) arrived in Gujarat and 2.10-2.15 lakh bales arrived in India. Kapas lost ₹5 to ₹830-850 for a maund of 20 kg. Gin delivery kapas stood at ₹855-860. Cottonseed went for ₹355-370.

On the other hand demanding higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton, more than 30 Congress MLAs presented a memorandum to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, in which the Congress alleged today that her government had become insensitive towards farmers.

In their memorandum, the Congress alleged that before elections, the BJP misled farmers by claiming that the UPA government had not given sufficient MSP and urged farmers to vote for the BJP for “acchhe din”.

However, under BJP rule, both at the Centre and the state, MSP of all agri-commodities plunged drastically. Today, farmers are under a huge debt, as they do not get fair prices. They are left with no other option other than commit suicide. It seems that the government has lost its sensitivity towards farmers, said the Congress memorandum.

The Congress also demanded that the Gujarat state government should announce a subsidy instead of spending crores on various festivals
