Teijin Frontier expands Octair polyester fiber production

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-06-11 15:34:29 – Japan

Teijin Frontier will install new manufacturing equipment for its Octair polyester insulation fibre at the Matsuyama Plant in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, as part of a capacity expansion aimed at meeting growing demand for alternatives to down insulation.

Octair is designed with a distinctive hollow cross-section featuring eight fins that radiate outward. This structure creates internal voids that help provide loft, low weight and thermal insulation performance comparable to down of the same weight. Teijin Frontier also says the fibre offers a soft texture, good dimensional stability and a smoother blowing process than conventional polyester fibrefill.

Demand for down alternatives has increased globally due to limited down supply and higher production costs. In response, Teijin Frontier developed Octair in 2024 and began test marketing the material.

The new expansion will support mass production of multiple Octair variants, including products containing polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) and recycled polyester fibres. The project includes new pre-processing, spinning and drawing equipment that will supplement the company’s existing production facilities and help provide stable, scalable supply.
