Teijin Limited has developed a new thermosetting long carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) that combines a heat-activated self-healing feature with high recyclability while maintaining the same mechanical performance as conventional CFRPs.
The new material can repair damaged areas by simply being heated to a specified temperature for a short period. This allows products to be repaired instead of replaced, helping extend their service life while reducing material waste and resource consumption.
In addition to its self-healing capability, the new CFRP is designed to be easily recycled through a simple chemical decomposition process. Its combination of high strength, light weight, and improved circularity makes it suitable for applications such as aircraft, automobiles, sporting goods, and other high-performance products.
Looking ahead to large-scale production and commercial adoption, Teijin will continue refining the material, product design, and recycling processes while working with industry partners to build a suitable supply chain. Through Teijin Carbon, the company is also seeking opportunities for joint development projects to accelerate commercialization.
