Stahl sets Scope 3 emission reduction target

Stahl, an active proponent of responsible chemistry, is presenting a target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that is consistent with the most current Science-Based Targets advice (SBTi). The new aim represents a significant step forward in the company’s journey toward carbon neutrality.

Stahl’s SBTi proposal contains an explicit pledge to cut Scope 3 upstream emissions by at least 25% over the following ten years, relative to the base year (2021). Stahl would achieve this decrease mostly by replacing its fossil-based raw materials with lower-carbon alternatives. The goal represents a significant step toward the goal of reducing global warming temperature increases to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050, as agreed in the 2015 Paris Climate Accords.

Stahl’s expanded commitment builds on the company’s existing emission reduction objectives for Scopes 1 and 2, which were established immediately after the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. Stahl has now decreased its Scope 1 and 2 (direct) GHG emissions by more than 30% as a result of operational efficiency improvements and decarbonization of its energy source.

Scope 3 GHG emissions include all indirect emissions that might occur throughout the value chain, such as those related to acquired raw materials, packaging, business travel, and transportation. Stahl’s Scope 3 emissions presently account for more than 90% of its total carbon footprint.

Stahl CEO Maarten Heijbroek, said that aligning their GHG ambitions to the Paris Agreement goals is challenging, and will need ongoing technological breakthroughs throughout the value chain. They are already collaborating closely with their upstream partners to meet the 10-year mark, and they will report on their progress in their annual ESG report.

Stahl ESG Director Michael Costello, said that by setting a clear, quantitative objective to decrease our Scope 3 emissions, they seek to provide their stakeholders with the most rigorous and thorough indication to date of how they will accomplish their climate ambitions as a company. They’re dedicated to working together to achieve this critical goal for their stakeholders, the planet, and society at large.
