SAIC-GM-Wuling
Chinese automaker SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has introduced bamboo-fiber-reinforced composites into interior components across more than 20 production vehicle models, marking a significant move toward the use of renewable materials in automotive manufacturing.
Developed in collaboration with the International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) and other partners, the technology is being used across 11 interior applications, including headliners, seat-back panels, trunk trim, sun visors and central floor carpets.
The development programme focused on three key challenges, producing lightweight bamboo fibers, improving fiber-resin bonding, and creating uniform fiber mats suitable for continuous industrial production.
The composite is manufactured using locally sourced bamboo from Guangxi. SGMW uses an interfacial toughening technique based on low-melting-point polymers to strengthen the connection between bamboo fibers and the resin matrix. Stepped pressure during moulding helps reduce voids, while air-flow and mechanical spreading technologies ensure an even fiber distribution.
The company has established an integrated supply chain linking bamboo cultivation, fiber processing, component manufacturing and vehicle assembly. Its Guangxi operations currently include one bamboo-fiber production line and two composite-panel lines, with combined annual capacity of approximately 200,000 square metres of finished panels and more than 4,000 tonnes of fibre raw material.
