Prada’s Re-Nylon gives into ready-to-wear

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2020-10-19 13:34:37 – Italy

Prada is exchanging its patented virgin nylon for a new launch called “regenerate”.  The Italian luxury brand is equipped to incorporate the Re-Nylon material into a wider spectrum of ready to wear footwear and accessories, including re-skinned versions of its classic nylon gabardine coat and feather-down puffer. It has been a year since Prada launched its first capsule line of bags and outerwear derived from recycled ocean plastic and textile waste. The company stated that both were reinvented for the 21st century and have marked their entrance into the sustainable Re-Nylon textile.

Prada had developed its Re-Nylon in collaboration with the company Aquafil. Aquafil’s regenerated Econyl fiber has been featured in over 750 brands which include swimwear by Reformation, eyeglasses by Tommy Hilfiger, activewear by Prana, jackets from Outerknown among others. Re-Nylon similar to Econyl can be recycled endlessly without a loss in quality. Prada claims that all its nylon products will be replaced by Re-Nylon instead of traditional nylon made from crude oil.

The new Re-Nylon collection merges sportswear elements with luxury and features slimline tailored single-breasted overcoats for men and full skirted cocktail dresses for women. There are non-regenerative offerings as well such as padded jackets, T-shirts, bucket hats, belts, combat boots and low-top sneakers. Prada hopes to keep the timeless apparel of Prada nylon alive.

Prada’s iconic Nylon backpack introduced in the year 1984 marked the company’s introduction of nylon into the sphere of luxury. The company has borrowed some the same aesthetics for a new of its looks by adopting their iconic front pockets, buckles and webbing shoulder straps to create fresh content and new points of visual interest.

Prada stated that by restructuring the bag packs into dresses echoes the notion of recycling and regeneration. They believe that it also changes the old into new which was the focus of Re-Nylon. All the items that feature the Prada Re-Nylon logo into a looping arrow has become the symbol of perpetual renewal and of the cyclical, everlasting life of Re-Nylon.  The production of Re-Nylon generates up to 90% less global warming impact when compared to the traditional nylon.

Prada is a significant part of the G7 Fashion Pact committing it to the implementation of Science based targets in order to attain net-zero impact by 2050 while tackling the issues of climate change, ocean protection, and biodiversity. Prada stated that its Re-Nylon is not an idea of luxury but was an ideology that is sustainably and truly responsible.
