The 15th Handloom day was celebrated in Manipur yesterday, the celebration was attended by Minister of Commerce and Industries Govindas Konthoujam. Manipur was the front runner in promoting textile industries in the north east.
'The North East Textile Promotion Scheme was launched last year to promote handloom products of North East in which state Manipur took the main initiative said Minister Govindas while speaking on the occasion of observing the Handloom Day at GM Hall.
Minister Govindas, who attended the function as chief guest, said the matter related to promoting Manipur textile industries has also been brought up and discussed in the state Assembly to develop further and bring up the status of the industry in the state.
The handloom day was also attended by B John Tlangtinkhuma, IAS, Director of Commerce and Industries and H.Rajendra Singh, Retd Assistant Director, Weavers services Centre, Ministry of Textile as guest of honour and president respectively.
The Government has also plans to introduce a separate Directorate for Handloom Products and envisions incorporating the use of handloom materials for school and college uniforms.
Exhibitions for handloom products would be organized to encourage weavers and promote their products both at domestic and international level .
