CITIC joins Inditex to turn brewery waste into textile materials

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-07-31 13:41:49 – Spain

The Centre for Research in Information and Communication Technologies (Citic) at the University of A Coruña has joined a new international research project funded by Inditex to develop sustainable textile materials from waste generated by the brewing industry.

The project is supported through the MIT-Spain Inditex Circularity Seed Fund, a programme created by Inditex in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the MIT Global Seed Funds (MISTI).

According to the University of A Coruña, the project will investigate ways to convert waste from hop cultivation and beer production into sustainable textile materials. The initiative aims to support circular economy practices while contributing to the decarbonisation of the textile sector.

The research team will identify suitable compounds for textile applications, create experimental prototypes, and assess their performance and environmental impact compared with conventional materials. The goal is to determine whether the new materials are technically and commercially viable.
